A Note from the Artisan

Fen Marks were born from my lifelong connection to animals, land, and heritage, and from decades of study in shamanism, animal symbolism, folklore, and the ways people have understood the natural world through symbol and story. With Swedish, German, and Irish roots, I have always been drawn to the quiet visual language of Northern European & Celtic folk traditions, old carvings, and elemental forms. Creating these marks is part of my work as an artisan at Studio on the Pond, where I translate the spirit of Whisperwood Fen into simple, enduring symbols of my own.

Each Fen Mark is created to reflect the character and symbolic meaning of its subject:  horse, fox, owl, deer, feather, and the many other creatures of the Fen. The marks are not copies of historical or ceremonial symbols, but contemporary designs shaped by lifelong observation, study, folklore, and my own relationship with animals and the land.

 Each piece begins with a foundation image that establishes the form of the design. I then build on that base by hand, painting, refining, and adding individual details until the image feels complete. Selected areas are then finished with gold foil or metallic leaf, allowing the mark to catch and reflect the light. I am drawn to the quiet presence that gold brings to these simple forms, recalling the luminous quality of old ceremonial and devotional art without overpowering the painting beneath it.

The process is slow and intentional, and no two finished pieces are exactly alike. Small variations in the paint, detailing, and foil are part of the handmade character of each work and reflect the imperfect beauty of the natural world that inspires it.
